I Am World Environmental

I AM WORLD works to significantly reduce the percentage of textile waste that ends up on the planet, generated by humanity, from the textile industry and unusable clothing.

I AM WORLD collects fabrics and clothing items from the community that can no longer be recycled or reused, i.e., items that have reached the end of their useful life.

The ACTION consists of preventing more textile waste from being transported to existing landfills, both here in our country and in several African countries, namely Ghana, where it will be deposited on beaches around the city of Accra and flow into the sea.

The Circuit

Fast Fashion produces clothes that are of lower quality and less durable. People buy them because they are more affordable.

However, the quality is clearly lower. The clothes do not last long and are quickly donated or thrown away. There are containers for depositing clothes and fabrics, which are then collected by companies that sort them (into items suitable and unsuitable for use) and send those that can be reused to the appropriate places (charities or other textile waste collectors, which in turn send them on to other destinations). Items that are not suitable for use go to landfills.

Much of this clothing arrives in Africa wrapped in branded clothing that feeds into the concept of fast fashion.

It enters second-hand clothing markets in bales weighing between 50kg and 200kg. This clothing, known as MITUMBA, is sold in these markets, which play a major role in the local economy.

The Cantamanto market in Ghana is the largest market of its kind.

Merchants buy bales of new clothing “blind.” Around 60% to 70% of the clothing is used for resale, while the remaining 30% to 40% is pure textile waste—because the bales contain torn, dirty clothing that is completely unsuitable for reuse. In short, our waste ends up in Africa.

These pieces (trash) are dumped in landfills on the outskirts of Accra, Ghana, flow into rivers, are deposited on roads, in sewers, and end up on beaches and in the sea, amounting to tons of textile waste scattered everywhere. All of this has catastrophic effects on the planet, through the contamination of soil, water, and the atmosphere.

I AM WORLD AMBIENTAL’s ACTION consists of 5 phases: collection, sorting, processing, creation of SOMA, and production of ECO DECORATION.

We have already prevented approximately one ton of textile waste from ending up in landfills or entering the maritime route to Africa!
